The Multicultural Centre of the Yukon (MCY) offers free classes in English as a Second Language (ESL). The Centre has part-time ESL classes Monday to Friday, with a continuous intake of participants. Class curriculum focuses on reading, writing, speaking and listening skills along with activities and field trips outside of the classroom setting. There may also be weekend ESL classes or courses of interest to immigrants. Check the Calendar of Events for program information.
Students in ESL programs must be assessed prior to class participation. The Canadian Language Benchmarks Placement Test (CLBPT) assesses four language skills - reading, writing, listening, and speaking - and will determine student placement in the English program. Assessments are available at the Centre on a weekly basis by appointment only.
In the MCY Language Lab, you can work on your own time and schedule using computer software to learn English. Similar to a classroom setting, you will learn English using a combination of images, text, and sound. The software offers varying levels of difficulty which increases as the student progresses. This learning process will allow you to enhance your reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.
The Language Lab is free to immigrants who are past or present clients or students of the Multicultural Centre of the Yukon. New clients are also welcome to register and use the Language Lab. Participants should also have some basic computer skills. The Lab will be available for use Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Students enrolled in ESL classes are not to use the Lab during scheduled class time. There is no restriction on how often during the week you can use the Lab. An individuals' time in the Language Lab will be determined by work and family commitments and demand from other clients for its use. Space is available on a first come first serve basis.
To request use of the Language Lab come to the MCY Administration Office to check on availability of a computer work station. New clients can register at the Multicultural Centre Administration Office and can learn how to participate in this program.
