Community Connections

The Community Connections program is a "befriending" program. The goal of the program is to create friendship matches between immigrants and their families and volunteers from the local community. The program helps immigrants adjust to a new life by matching them with trained volunteers from the community. Matches are made based upon gender, age and common interests. The match is expected to meet at once a month.

Volunteers have the opportunity to welcome and assist an immigrant in their settling process, form a rewarding friendship, pursue a career in their field, gain a better understanding of Canada's evolving multiculturalism and learn about other countries, cultures, and languages.

Activities may include:

  • attending a English Conversation Circle;
  • attending potluck dinners and other social activities;
  • walks in the neighbourhood; going out for coffee;
  • visits to libraries and communities centres;
  • using public transportation;
  • shopping;
  • visiting local attractions; or
  • providing a list of free local attractions.

If you are interested in being a volunteer with the Multicultural Centre of the Yukon, you can download a copy of the Volunteer Application Form. Drop it off at our office at 4141D 4th Avenue, Whitehorse, Yukon.
