The goal of the Multicultural Centre of the Yukon (MCY) is to welcome immigrants and to provide the necessary information, services and orientation to their new community. MCY will help foster a welcoming community by using awareness, communication, relationships, acceptance and advocacy.
The Multicultural Centre of the Yukon will provide practical guidance to assist the client in coping with the problem of everyday living e.g. housing, transportation and access to social and health services. This includes an introduction to the local community that would provide the immigrant with a sense of belonging to the community, and also provide information about their rights and obligations. MCY programs offer one-to-one assistance, group sessions and site visits that cover topics such as:
Welcome to the Yukon - climate, transportation, health care, housing, employment, government structure, identification cards, local services, getting settled and getting to know your new community.
Banking and Financial Information - Canadian currency, banking, paying bills, use of debit and credit cards, income tax, and protecting personal information.
Emergency Services and Health Care Information - fire, ambulance and police, doctor, dentist, hospital and clinics, health care card and health insurance.
Canadian Work Ethics and Employment - job application and resume, understanding Canadian practices and rituals, workplace do's and don'ts, and basic employment rules and standards.
